I probably have mentioned before that Atlanta is home to at least three globally famous enterprises: the Delta Airlines that I flew here with, the Coca-Cola whose products we consume all the time, and the Cabled News Network, which we might think to be headquartered in Washington D.C. or something.

But it’s true, CNN’s headquarter is in this southern city and where it initially started broadcasting. Surprisingly, even though it is now the No.1 global news network, followed by the BBC, CNN only started its business in the 1980s. It’s a fast growing history similar to that of HKUST (Hong Kong University Of Science & Technology), the school I am originally from, bringing new ideas to start an organization aiming to grasp the future trends, and gain quick success.

The building that CNN global headquarters currently occupy has been developed into a tourist attraction, where people can take studio tours and see how news programs were made, even witness one being made if they get lucky. The ground floor lobby has a few shops and a huge food court, surrounded by big screens broadcasting various CNN programs. It’s a nice combination.

The studio tour did not allow photo taking entirely, and it was quite interesting. The tour guide should be one of the senior staff, taking a break from regular program duties. These news-reporting people are very eloquent speakers, and the whole trip made the media industry career seem quite attractive—that is to say, the tour was somewhat like an interesting recruitment talk. However, given them famous reporters emphasizing on objectivity on the screens, we always know that there’s a subjective bias. Personally I will never forget what they did in spring 2008(fake Tibetan riot photos and selective deceptive coverage of Olympic torch rally protests), constantly reminding me that whatever which news channel tells you what, you need to make your own judgment to approach closer to the truth.
