In the latest issue of SityTime, we have 5 articles on 5 cities, which are Guangzhou/Canton, Atlanta, Paris, Beijing and Providence.
Finally, we have article on our capital-Beijing from Elyse Ding. Elyse Ding is also a new contributor for SityTime. When the first English issue was out, some of my friends asked me not to keep the English part because I didn’t have advantage. Compared to the native English speakers, I couldn’t write as well as them. If my target was non-Chinese living in China, foreigners all had their own communities and they wouldn’t be not interested in SityTime. I became confused if I should keep the English version of SityTime. At this time, I got an email from Elyse, in which she said she was fascinated by my idea of bilingual website on cities. What’s more, she would like to write articles for Sitytime and edit English articles; she studied English during college. This in-time email has encouraged me a lot! I am determined to keep the English issues running.
Again, thank you Elyse Ding for your encouragement and joining us!
Here are the articles of the issue:
Following Smash The Old World, Build The New (1), we are continuing the demolishing story by Smash The Old World, Build The New (2). What is the fate of a village in an emerging area in Guangzhou city? What are the voices from the villagers? Sam is going to end his story in this piece.
A Visit To CNN Center is a short article from Difan. It simply introduces the world’s No.1 global news network CNN.
In So Far, Comme Si Comme Ca, Lynn shares her feeling about just-arriving in Paris. It is interesting to learn the experience when someone is going to unfold her new life in a new culture. Will Lynn be lost in translation?
Through Subway, To Beijing is a very interesting story about taking subway in Beijing. Oh, it is not taking; it is squeezing, in Elyse‘s word. Elyse‘s language is plain and facetious that catches my attention once I start reading it. Subway is a vital transportation in modern cities especially in big cities. It works like the vessel to convey blood to every organ in the body. In Beijing, whose population density is high, taking subway becomes a farce that everyone is trying every effort to get on the train and get off at the right stop, if they are fortunate to squeeze out.
Say Hi To The Brownie talks about Providence, where Brown University is located. People call students from Brown Brownie, a kind of chocolate cake, my favorite dessert. The author Silu went to visit her friend, a Brownie, in Providence. Along her journey, she found the differences between American tradition and Chinese tradition as well as the West Coast and the East Coast.
